Come rain or's learning time!

Well, we have had a busy week this week and have become totally immersed in our new topic for this half term - Extreme Weather!

In topic lessons, we have watched videos and looked at information on the internet about different weathers and we have explored the equipment used by meteorologists to measure the weather such as; rain gauges, barometers, thermometers, wind vanes etc. which has been fun and next we will begin to look in more detail at some specific examples of extreme weather...we can't wait!

Our topic theme has crossed over into our Literacy work and has led to us using both descriptive language tools and factual information to produce fiction and non-fiction written work. We felt really inspired and enjoyed using a range of skills which have helped us to focus on our VCOP.

In other subjects we have been; developing tactics and skills for invasion games and learning lots of new PE vocabulary along the way, continuing to use apparatus and resources to support us in our maths learning (especially in helping us understand place value and calculations) and starting our new science topic of rocks and soils with some outdoor learning.

We are ending our busy week with some activities to support this year's Children in Need appeal during our Golden Time and watching Year 2's class assemblies which should both be great fun!

This week we have been really busy practising our class assemblies which are giving us the chance to share all of our learning this half term linked to our Ancient Greek topic.

We have lots of things to share and have been hard at work learning lines, singing, dancing and acting and we hope that everyone who comes to watch will enjoy the show!

Alongside this we have been writing our own Myths and Legends in both Literacy and topic to continue to develop our writing skills and give us lots of opportunity to become absorbed in extended writing. It has been really fun and it has helped us show our imaginative and creative sides in a different way.

We have had a fun-filled first half term full of many different activities and look forward to the next next term as we embark on our new topic of Extreme Weather and begin the build up to festive fun.... It really is all go in Year 3!

Fundraising Fun for "Wear it Pink"!

Wear It Pink

Last Friday we had a great day linking our learning activities to our Wear it Pink fundraising day.

We all looked fab in our pink clothes and accessories and made a super contribution to the final amount raised on the day of £656 - an amazing achievement!

We spent the morning doing three activities which were related to making pink fairy cakes as part of our fun day; we explored measures using and making links to our Numicon work, explored and ordered information texts for making cakes and carried out some practical work to make our cakes which we then took home to eat - yum!

It was a good day and we are proud to have done something so worthwhile for such an important charity.

Feeling Inspired by Exciting Writing!

User Rating:  / 1

This week we had enjoyed a Literacy inspiring workshop at which we got the opportunity to share aspects of our learning in Literacy and have fun trying out some of our word and sentence activities with visitors from home.

We had a great time showing our friends and family the staircase game, rainbow sentences, sentence tricks and exciting Visual Literacy , all of which we use to inspire, improve and develop our writing.

Thank you to everyone who came and shared the morning with us and, for those of you who were unable to attend, we hope you have fun using the information packs to explore the activities further at home!

This week we have also been continuing to develop our science investigation skills to explore materials and their properties using different experiments and fair testing. We can use these opportunities to develop our collaboration and communication skills when we work in groups to complete the tasks and share out learning.

FOLTE Day and Olympic Fun!

User Rating:  / 0

We had a brilliant day last Thursday enjoying a day of shared learning with our FOLTE partners from Hollyfield School.

We met new people and spent time together exploring one of our FOLTE Trust values - Equity. As part of our learning, we played games and considered the importance of rules in making things fair. We also created some collaborative art based on the logo for Fair Trade. Some of our finished artwork made it onto our Excellence board as we were so proud of the great work we produced by co-operating well with others and being absorbed in our learning.

This week, we have begun with some exciting topic lessons to learn more about The Ancient Greeks. Our focus has been finding out more about the origins of our modern day Olympics as these started in Ancient Greece with lots of traditions which still exist today and exciting events such as; chariot racing, wrestling, javelin and hoplite races (in which Greek soldiers ran in their battle outfits brandishing shields).

We made our own board games based on facts about the olympics and then moved on to enjoy some outdoor learning by taking part in our own mini Ancient Greek olympics! It was a fun day of learning which has increased our knowledge and understanding even more!

Minotaur Art

User Rating:  / 0

We have continued with our fun Numicon activities in Year 3 and are learning more about the shapes and making links in our maths learning each time we use them. The lessons are great fun and our partner and group work results in some great thoughts and ideas which reflect our ever growing understanding of number.

This week we have also moved on in our topic work to find out about the story of The Minotaur.

We listened to the story and retold it through freeze frames and drama and by creating storyboards. We then had great fun in the art room developing our understanding of line and tone by creating a Minotaur picture using charcoal and we created press print pictures of this famous mythical monster too which allowed us to explore different media and techniques.

Look out for some of our fantastic art work on display in our classrooms!

Fun with Numicon!

User Rating:  / 0

We have been having great fun in our practical maths lessons by taking time to explore our great new Numicon resource. We have been using the shapes to explore number and using our BLP noticing skills to spot patterns and make links between the shapes and number facts.

In out topic work we are finding out a lot about The Ancient Greeks, this week focusing on Greek gods and Greek warfare which has given us lots of opportunities to use the ipads and laptops for research. We are great historical investigators now!

We are also really looking forward to our harvest assembly this week and have been busy practising our song so that we can sing it on Friday with plenty of confidence and enthusiasm...

Welcome to the new Year 3!

We have had a great start to the new school year with lots of fun and hard work ... starting as we mean to go on!

This week we have revisited our rules, routines and expectations and have been busy working through our RE work on "Stories with Meanings" and beginning our topic for this half term which is "Mythical Monsters". We started this with art work sketching Ancient Greek artefacts and created our own imaginative mythincal monsters and drawing them exploring the use of line and tone.

We are looking forward to work next week on our transition unit for Literacy with writing linked to the story of Voices in The Park and trying out new maths resources to support our maths learning and develop our practical maths skills.

Healthy Lifestyles, Sports Day and Charlotte's Web

User Rating:  / 0

Following our visit to the Healthy Caravan we were inspired to think about healthy food, the functions of the organs of our body and what we can do to keep ourselves more healthy.  We ate fruit kebabs, designed an information leaflet about the organs of the human body and some of us investigated how micro-organisms grow. During Sports Day we were able to demonstrate our athletic skills and we all had a fun time in the sunshine.  Thank you to the PTA for the very welcomed lolly-ices! This week we are reading Charlotte's Web.  We are really fortunate to have a copy each and share the reading in class.  We have also been learning about the author E.B. White and some of the other books he wrote. We will continue with this book next week too.

Aeroplanes and Local History

User Rating:  / 0

On Wednesday we had an aeroplane, not exactly landing, but arriving at our school.  Roger, the owner and the pilot, was able to tell us lots of information about how an aeroplane works, which helped us with designing our own aircraft later in the afternoon.  We related this theme to Maths and calculated estimated times of arrivals and to Literacy too. Thank you Mr David (who is actually a pilot too) for organising this. On Friday we visited Bishey Vesey Grammar School and were treated to a tour in which we learned lots of historical facts relating to the building, the school and Bishop Vesey.  We were able to spend some time to do an observational drawing of the school too.  This week we will be learning about how to live more healthily and remembering that on Tuesday we can bring items in for the Summer Fayre and it is a mufti day too.
