Welcome to the Year 6 blog. Find out what our classes have been up to lately!

Autobiographies and Henri Rousseau

User Rating:  / 0

This week in writing we have each created an autobiography, but imagining that we are fifty years old! It's been great fun to elaborate on future events - but to write them in past tense. We've enjoyed looking at the teachers' autobiographies for ideas as well as Michael McIntyre's, Usain Bolt's, Jacqueline Wilson's and Roald Dahl's. We used these examples to make our writing interesting and to 'hook' the reader in.

We have also been learning about the artist Henri Rousseau in our topic lessons. We studied his style of painting and have started to draw our own animal designs in Rousseau's style.

Henry Rousseau Inspired Art

User Rating:  / 2

This week we are looking at some of the art produced by the artist Henry Rousseau and how he used a 'layering' technique to create perspective.  We are using his art as a stimulus for our own drawings in response to our topic 'The Weird World of Animals'

This week we are looking forward to our writing lessons on autobiographies and biographies. We are going to be finding out the features of both types of text and how they vary. We'll then be writing a biography for the character of Carl from the film 'Up'.

SPaG in Year 6

User Rating:  / 0

We are working really hard on our SPaG.  Today we were learning about active and passive verbs - changing them from one to the other.

e.g. Sarah pushed the door wide open. (A)

The door was pushed wide open by Sarah.  (P)

See if you can write more sentences of your own and change them around!

Wizard of Oz Performance

User Rating:  / 0

On Monday we were visited by a theatre company who performed 'The Wizard of Oz' to us. We have used the show as a stimulus for our writing this week by creating diary entries, setting descriptions and balanced arguments.

Mrs. Dixon, Miss Maltby and Miss Greenwood would like to thank all of the children in year six for having a fantastic first half term. You have worked incredibly hard, made good progress and have shown enthusiasm with everything that we have done.

We hope that you have a brilliant half term!

World War Two Day

User Rating:  / 0

Year Six had a fantastic learning experience today by going back in time to World War Two. They took part in two workshops. In the first they were able to explore various artefacts, dress up in clothes worn during the time period and march like soldiers around the playground.

Following this the children sang songs that soldiers and children sung during the war. Keith explained the meaning behind the lyrics of the songs including 'Run Rabbit and The White Cliffs of Dover'. It was really interesting to learn about.

Throughout the day Fran and Keith gave the children many fascinating facts and stories about the war and how it impacted of them and their families.

Well done to year six for your enthusiasm and curiosity. We are sure that you learnt many new and exciting things!

This week Year 6 have been really busy preparing for their class assembly.  We are almost ready (just one more practice to go!)  We will be sharing our experiences of Howtown; the things we enjoyed and things that challenged us!  The scripts have been prepared by the children themselves - with just a little bit of help from the teachers.  At the end we are singing a well known song... can you guess what it might be?

Some of the skills that year six learnt included: how to catch the ball, how to throw the ball (backwards) and how to defend. Mr. Davis was extremely impressed with the children's abilities and is looking forward to teaching them again next Monday, Well done year six.

Year 6 have been writing this week based on the Harry Potter films.  Year 6 have written some fantastic character portraits, diary entries and a letter of complaint.  The children have used their sentence tricks to make sure their writing includes many higher lever skills.  Well done!

Miss Greenwood and Mrs Dixon also held a parent workshop and shared with parents the Year 6 curriculum and how to help children at home.  Thank you to everyone who attended :)
